Undergraduate Information and Communication Engineering

Advanced Information and Communication Engineering Course / Information Network Engineering Course

Through specialized courses on information network and on communication engineering, students are expected to be a sophisticated specialist of each field. As several qualifications can be obtained during the study at the university, students will be equipped with practical skills directly useful after graduation.

Students will first learn basic knowledge of information, and then go to a specialized course of either "network" or "communication". The department aims to foster students who can be a specialist of a field such as on-line software, network, radio operation, communication, and broadcasting.

Field of Study

  • Study of high-tech information communication network including Internet and optical broadband.
  • Study of radio operation, mobile communication including smart phones, Wi-Fi, and terrestrial digital broadcasting.
  • Study of network software including Cloud Computing and Twitter.

Career Outlook

Through the study of basic and specialized information communication technology, students are expected to be a specialist of their specialized field. Also, as the department encourages students to obtain qualifications, many of alumnae and alumni have found a job with which they can utilize specialized knowledge of information and communication engineering.

Research and Development for Future

Laboratory work on a scale model of an optical microcircuit which utilizes a photonic crystal structure

Hiroshi Maeda, Professor

Research of optical communication engineering and optical information processing

Optical signals are transmitted through a waveguide, or a light path. However, with a conventional waveguide, the refractive direction of optical signals cannot be changed instantly. Therefore, optical integrated circuits (IC) could not have as high density as electrical ICs or LSI circuits.

Technology supporting the advanced information society

A photonic crystal structure is now gathering attentions because it can be structured by just regularly arranging column shaped objects, and it has low loss when the refractive direction of a light is changed suddenly. By using a scale model, our laboratory has reproduced a phenomenon of the light world as a phenomenon of the electromagnetic world which uses microwaves. We are continuously researching circuits for better processing of light signals.
