研究概要 電力貯蔵装置として、化学反応を伴う二次電池が使用されているが、それらの二次電池は電極部分の劣化が起こり、数年周期で電池の取替えが必要となる。しかし最近、電荷の物理的な吸脱着反応により電気を蓄積するため電極の劣化がほとんど無く、しかもメンテナンス不要な電池である電気二重層キャパシタ(以下キャパシタ)が注目され、自動車などの回生エネルギーを有効活用するなど、普及が進んでいる。本研究ではキャパシタの電極に使用されている炭素材料に着目し、新しい炭素材料を使った高性能なキャパシタの開発及び劣化メカニズムの解明を行っている。また、鉛蓄電池のサルフェーション劣化の抑制、次世代マグネシウム空気燃料電池の開発、スピンゼーベック効果を利用した熱電発電素子の開発に関する研究も行っている。
