| Biography | Y. Kawamura was born in Osaka Japan, on 26 August in 1949. He received the B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degree in the field of Mechanical Engineering from Osaka University, in 1973, 1975 and 1980, respectively. In 1980, he jointed the Institute of Physical and Chemical Research (RIKEN), Wako, Saitama, Japan. He engaged in research on the new lasers and their applications, such as free electron lasers and excimer lasers. He also engaged in the research activities of laser processing such as excimer laser lithography. In 1995, he jointed Fukuoka Institute of Technology. Since then, he has been engaged in the development of the magnetic suspension and balance system, which is used to support the model and measure the aerodynamic force without supporting wires or stings. He has been studying the robotic bird and fish having the learning function to optimize the flapping and swimming patterns using the "hill-climbing method", which is making use of the neural network methods. From 2001 to 2005, he was the director of Electronics Research Laboratory of Fukuoka Institute of Technology. In 2005, He studied about the insect-size flapping MAV (micro air vehicle) at the Department of Zoology of University of Cambridge. Recently, he has been mainly engaged in the study on the insect-size robotic flapping MAV. |
